Panel lottery ?

Samsung have still been using either Samsung or AUO panels from their very first QLED models and in the years before as well different production batches from the same model, particularly lower down in the lineup, could come with different panels (sometimes even of the IPS type when earlier batches had a VA panel). Since that time Sony on the other hand have been very consistent with their panels, no lottery at all throughout the year on any of their models.

New Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 Streaming amp

I didn’t realise that. So what type of power amp does it use? What were your thoughts on comparison to the 2170 out of interest?

It uses class D amplification. The 2170 might sound a slight bit better, and deliver more muscle. It really comes down to what system you are planning to drive with the amp. I tested with a lyngdorf MH2/BW2 system, where the MH2`s playing from 200 hz up, does not require the power of a monster amp. With this setup, there was a huge headroom and redicolus SPL possible that I could not drive to clipping.. Also, the 1120 is very modern, and has the same web GUI as the big boys (3400, MP50/60). Not all the same functionality, but all the important stuff. 8 filter voicings, flexible setup, subsonic filter, RIAA amp, ROON support and so on...

Sony.. the sleeping kings of VR

Why on earth would Sony release a standalone headset?

I can’t see it happening.

Their PSVR headset has sold poorly when you consider how many PS4s there are out there. If they’re going to continue investing in VR they’re more likely to release one for their new console.

Oculus/Facebook have the standalone market sewn up I think. The biggest advantage they have is with software, the Quest has a decent sized library of games, apps and experiences and if Sony release a standalone headset tomorrow, even if they plough millions into developers and fund games, it won’t have anywhere near as good support from developers.

And now that Oculus have opened up the ability for devs like me to get our games on their platform there’s going to be even more developer support from platforms like Itch...

Which TV for PS5?

With the release of the new consoles getting closer I (for me) think it’s time I start looking at which TV I am going to buy for the release of the PS5.

I currently own a 65KS8000 as my main TV but will be looking to add one to my gaming area before the release of the PS5.

I don’t want anything bigger than 55″. I was looking at the 49″ version of the Q80T but then I read that the 49″ version of this series doesn’t have HDM 2.1. I have now seen that currently the 55″ version is the same price so this has also caught my eye. The 55″ Q90T is £300 more expensive and I’m not sure what this offers over the Q80T series.

I’m not looking to bite the bullet right now but ideally in the next few weeks...

Amps that double down into 4ohms

Many of the better makes have the capability of paralleling the power transformer, so that it supplies more current at a lower voltage for lower impedance loads.
This is one of the few occasions where valve amplifiers can have an advantage. The classical configuration uses an output transformer to reduce the high voltage from the valve to a high current into a speaker. So making them multi impedance is a very low cost added option .
The irony being that the greatest compliment for transistor output stages was that they could avoid the distortion of an output transformer!.
